Focused Shockwave Therapy

Effective treatment for chronic soft tissue injuries

What is Focused Shockwave Therapy?

Focused Shockwave Therapy (FSWT) is a non-invasive medical treatment that uses high-energy sound waves to target injuries deep within the body, focused shockwaves concentrate their maximum power at depths of up to 12cm.

Using the advanced Piezowave system, we can target specific tissues, with millimetre precision using adjustable spacers.

How It Works: The Science of Recovery

Focused shockwave therapy does more than just mask pain; it "reboots" the body's natural healing response:

  • Accelerates Repair:  Cell regeneration in all connective tissue types – ligament, tendon and muscle. Stimulates cartilage.
  • Boosts Circulation: Promotes the growth of new blood vessels in damaged areas.
  • Relieves Chronic Pain: Desensitises nerve endings to interrupt long-term pain signals.
  • Clears Calcification: Targets and breaks down calcium deposits for natural absorption.

Conditions We Treat

Focused Shockwave is exceptionally versatile, treating everything from acute sports injuries to chronic "wear and tear" or "overuse" injuries:

  • Foot & Ankle: Plantar Fasciitis, Achilles Tendinopathy.
  • Knee & Hip: Jumper's Knee, IT Band Syndrome, Hip Bursitis, Meniscus/Ligament injuries.
  • Arm & Shoulder: Tennis Elbow (Lateral Epicondylitis), Rotator Cuff issues.
  • Deep Tissue: Myofascial Pain Syndrome, Ischial Tuberosity.
  • Bone Health: Stress fractures and delayed bone healing.

What to Expect During Your Session

  • Duration: For your first visit, you will be seen by one of our Physiotherapists for a 45-minute shockwave assessment where they will be able to decide if your symptoms and condition are appropriate for focused shockwave therapy.
  • Frequency: Typically, once a week for 3–6 weeks.
  • The Sensation: You may feel a mild stinging or soreness as the waves target the injury. Most patients find it very tolerable.
  • Active resting/Downtime: Depending on your activities, your rest 'quotas' will be discussed with you.
  • Exercise: your physiotherapist will advise you on your best exercise options during the course of treatments

Safety & Eligibility

With an 88% success rate of zero side effects, FSWT is incredibly safe. Minor swelling (10%) or bruising (8%) may occur but usually fades quickly.
